about

The Sound of Art to Come Records, a Transylvanian based record label, proudly presents the debut of Lil Obeah Meets Dub Colossus – Tăcerea extended play.

After ten years of making eclectic music, the dub ghost musician from Romania has tuned-in to another frequency creating Lil Obeah from Transylvania. When it comes to his sound, he defines it as duppy dub from a parallel universe - The Shape of Dub to Come dimension.

He works with professionals in the music business, from Bucharest-based producer Marius Costache of 148Studio to international stars like Nick Dubulah of Dub Colossus, Transglobal Underground and Dreadsquad. His remix work includes local artists, international sound clashers like Dubmatix and Prince Fatty, but also fictional acts like Reefah Madniss from Berlin.

Lil Obeah’s roots are a very eclectic batch of bands and artists, including his own Crowd Control, The Shape of Moombhaton and Tunesinnaourheads projects. He is inspired by the strangest Romanian sounds, ranging from weird experimental authentic local dub to traditional reggae-dub with ska and folk-rock influences, music and records released near the Black Sea from 1988 to the present.

The artist considers Dub music sound art and aims to create a forever authentic Romanian horror film soundtrack with his songs and remixes.

Delia Teșileanu of Soho Radio:

In a time where you physically can’t travel anywhere, you’re left to your own devices to explore your surroundings. So where do you start? Where do you go?

Everywhere.

Especially if you’re a dub ghost musician from Romania with the ability to tune in to unfamiliar frequencies and translate the sound discovered there into a vernacular that’s both local and expansive – duppy dub with deep roots in a parallel universe.

Lil Obeah’s masterful deconstruction of the mystical vibes of his homeland of Transylvania, mixed with the robust and inimitable sound of Dub Colossus resulted in a folk-infused, bassline-heavy offering that is equally haunting and soothing. A door to a portal you can’t afford to pass up.

Tăcerea is an eerie invitation to seek and face the unknown, the silence and the solitude we’ve come so accustomed to run from.

The record comes equipped with a series of rerubs and a visually striking piece of artwork by Cristiana Bucureci – a collage that undeniably adds to the collectable value of this release.

Martin Blomqvist:

Transylvania’s Lil Obeah in collaboration with the mighty Dub Colossus delivers a dark, almost unsettling vibe on the tune Vraja. The Middle Eastern influence is there on both tunes with their chant like vocals.

On Tăcerea, the weight of the drum and bass carry the tune forward and it makes me think of early Dub Syndicate and other experimental tunes from Adrian Sherwood’s On U Sound. The use of ancient instruments such as Santur or Țambal adds to the mysticism. Some serious dubmixing lifts the dub to a next level with quirky sounds and heavy use of effects.

The sound is truly unique, blending the dub techniques of the old masters with exciting elements and sounds seldom heard in any style of music.

All the best from Transylvania.
